R2H

San Diego County Regional Airport Authority's
Quieter Home Program
San Diego, CA

Originally presented, the Quieter Home Program was established to upgrade the residences around Lindbergh Field that were within the flight path. The plan was to involve sound attenuation treatments to mitigate aircraft noise in residences with decibel levels of 65 or more.  The treatments are to reduce interior noise levels by at least 5 decibels.  Upgrades have at time included minor upgrades to the existing structures in addition to redesigning and modifying window openings, including wall remodels; new air conditioning systems, including new roof structures to support the modifications; other miscellaneous modifications to accommodate the residences.

R2H was responsible for structural engineering studies and site inspection reports of approximately 2,500 homes over the past four years.  R2H was to evaluate all residences that required structural modifications.

R2H worked in coordination with Joseph Wong Architects, who provided all Architectural services for the residences. Joseph Wong Architects’ scope of work for this project includes an assessment and inventory in each home followed by a proposal for architectural modifications to improve the Noise Reduction Level consistent with FAA criteria. Architectural standard details are developed and updated with details covering typical installations for windows and skylights, doors, vents and attic hatches. Preliminary design for windows, doors, attic insulation, basement or crawl spaces and HVAC system are prepared in the form of a design package.
