Cannon Court Hotel & Restaurant
Carlsbad, CA

With tourism being one of the major industries within San Diego County, there is a growing need for hotels and restaurants. In an effort to try and meet this need, West Development built an upper scale hotel for Hilton Hotel. R2H Engineering provided the structural design for this hotel along with the two restaurants that will service the hotels occupants.
This three story wood and steel framed hotel is over a concrete parking basement. It is an 80 unit luxury hotel comprising 53,800 sq. ft. in a wood framed structure with steel framing in the longer spans. The hotel has a Cape Cod motif which includes multiple dormers in the third story, creating an irregular roof pattern. There is a porte cochere and an arcade extending from the lobby area. The 2nd floor, 3rd floor and roof have coffered, furred down and suspended ceiling loads. The lobby area has a canopy which projects the entry door outward.
The underground parking garage holds 105 spaces in approximately 38, 315 sq. ft. The garage has a concrete roof and columns with masonry perimeter walls. Special consideration needed to be given for the post-tensioned deck in order to accommodate the appropriate fire truck loading.
Two retaining walls were also included. One retaining wall was on the north side of the garage ramp for pass-under of the ventilation pipe. The other was a curved masonry, retaining wall adjacent to the drive ramp connecting to the corner of the garage wall.
R2H also designed and detailed all the stairways (several types and layouts) in the building and the garage which includes calculations for horizontal and vertical members. In addition, R2H also designed a partially subterranean cooling tower vault that was not contiguous to the garage slab. This included the design walls, opening, and access stairs foundation in compatible format with the mechanical equipment.
R2H provided full structural designs of the primary framing systems of the structure. These designs include preliminary layouts, material selections, foundation and superstructure designs, appurtenant structure designs, coordination with architectural, civil, mechanical and electrical, full structural drawings, preparation of specifications, bidding assistance and construction administration services.
